Major General Terry L. Scherling is a Senior Consultant with the American Business Development Group, an internationally respected, full-spectrum business development consulting firm, now representing a diverse list of over fifty prominent U.S. and international businesses. American Business Development Group enjoys a reputation as the largest business development firm in the United States which specializes in the re-equipping and modernization of the Reserve Component. The firm has facilitated more than $680,000,000 in “new found sales” for client companies in the last year and historically each year for the last four years.
General Scherling has a unique combination of 33 years of military and civilian experience in the federal government and 22 years of entrepreneurial experience and success as a business owner. With first-hand experience working with the White House, the National and Homeland Security Councils, the Congress, the Department of Defense, the Department of Homeland Security, other federal, state and local interagency and non-governmental partners she has developed a strong knowledge as well as network base within both public and private sectors.
General Scherling's leadership positions speak to her expertise and success in areas of national defense and homeland security. As the Senior Advisor to the Secretary of Defense and Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff for homeland defense and military support to civil authorities, she provided decisive leadership and expertise for crisis actions during Hurricane Katrina, the largest military support operation in U.S. history. She successfully established the Department of Defense biometric forensic program in Iraq and Afghanistan contributing to the apprehension of insurgents, terrorists and criminals. General Scherling was, moreover, one of the key leaders to pioneer and provide oversight to the Joint IED Defeat Organization which today is saving lives by providing more than 4 billion technology and non-technology solutions annually. She has made formal presentations and briefings to the Congress, the White House led Counter-Terrorism Support Group, the Homeland Security Council, the Secretary of Homeland Security, the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and the National Guard Adjutants General. In addition, she was the architect for the Air Force risk assessment strategy that defined the homeland defense capabilities and served to inform the investment strategy for the Air Force.
Since retirement, General Scherling has served as President and CEO of TENICA and Associates, LLC, a national defense and homeland security consulting firm providing support to both public and private sector (government and non-governmental) clients. The extraordinary depth and breadth of expertise in areas of national defense and homeland security that General Scherling offers are matched by her skills in business development, including market analysis and strategic planning.
Major General Scherling is a Senior Seminar Fellow of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She received her Masters in National Resource Strategy from the Industrial College of the Armed Forces, National Defense University and her Bachelor of Science degree from North Dakota State University. She has served on the Board of Directors and as the Campaign Director for the United Way and on the Board of Directors for the North Dakota State University Alumni Association. General Scherling currently serves on a military advisory board and councils a number of businesses.
